Short-tailed opossums have sensitive digestive systems, and it’s important to understand which foods can be dangerous or unhealthy for them. Feeding your pet the right diet helps support their overall health and longevity.

    Unsafe Foods

Unsafe foods can cause harm or illness to your opossum due to their ingredients or how they’re sourced. Avoid feeding:

    • Wild insects – These may carry parasites, diseases, or harmful pesticides.

    • Dairy products – Large amounts can cause digestive upset and diarrhea.

    Unhealthy Foods

While not immediately toxic, some foods can negatively impact your opossum’s health over time. Limit or avoid:

    • Beef and pork – These meats are high in fat and difficult for opossums to process.

    • Other high-fat foods – Excess fat can lead to obesity and liver problems.

    • High-sugar foods – Such as candy, fruit juices, or sweetened treats.

    • High-sodium foods – Like processed meats and salty snacks.

    A Balanced Diet

To ensure your opossum receives complete and balanced nutrition, choose a diet specially formulated for their needs. Opossum Complete from Exotic Nutrition provides the proper blend of protein, vitamins, and minerals—making it an excellent staple food for short-tailed opossums.

For more information on safe and healthy feeding, see our article on Feeding Short-Tailed Opossums.
