Chapter 86 – Bringing Hobo Home
Mocha had devoured his breakfast and was just about to lay down for a nap when Dad came in. “Mocha, Hobo’s ashes are ready to be picked up. Want to go with me to bring him home?” Mocha was not particularly fond of car rides, but for his late buddy, he’d suck it up and do it. Mocha thought, “OK.”
Dad placed him in a single rabbit carrier and strapped the carrier into the passenger seat of the T-bird. It was a warm sunny day as the two took a leisurely drive over the mountains to the vet.
When they arrived at the vet, Dad suggested, “As long as we’re here, let’s let Dr. Stern give you a once over.” At twelve years old, Mocha was a senior bun. Things start falling apart at that age. Mocha thought, “Wait, what? You didn’t say I was getting a checkup!” Like most rabbits, Mocha was not very fond of visits to the vet.
Their supervet, Dr. Stern, listened to his heart and lungs. She cleaned and checked his ears. She felt around for abnormal growths. She checked his teeth. “His teeth are perfect!” she pronounced, “Which is probably why he has lived so long. Other than his blocked tear duct, he’s fine!” Mocha and Dad were both elated to hear the news.
As they headed out the door, Amber, the receptionist, handed them Hobo’s urn. “We’re so sorry about Hobo,” she said. Dad had ordered an urn big enough for two rabbits. When the time came, he wanted Mocha and Hobo to be together for eternity.
But for now, he still had more cherished time with Mocha. He reached into the carrier and gave Mocha a head scratch. “I’m so glad you got a clean bill of health! Let’s take Hobo home with us.”
The three of them headed back to the House of Buns together.
