Belinda continues the story about drama in the backyard

    Hello. It’s Belinda.

Today’s blog is part two of the Father’s Day blog I wrote last week.

But first I have to talk about something important.

    Keeping safe in the heat.

Is it hot where you live? It’s getting “muggy” here.

My roommate said a heat wave is coming this week here in western Pennsylvania. On Wednesday it might feel like 100 degrees.

    That’s way too hot.

I start to feel “off” around 80 degrees. Many rabbits do.

The best thing you can do to help your rabbits “beat the heat” is to plan ahead.

So I hope you will read “Beat The Heat: Keeping Your Rabbit Cool In The Summer.”

It includes tips on how to prevent overheating. And what to do if you notice your rabbit getting sick.

OK now back to part two of my “Rabbit Dad” blog.

Last week I told you about my roommate watching a pair of rabbits “play tag” in the back yard.

The English said they were “dancing the tango.” I didn’t know what that meant. And I didn’t ask.

But I think I got my answer a few weeks later.

The whole thing started right around sundown. My roommate was running water upstairs in the kitchen.

Suddenly, she let out a shriek. The water stopped.

    A minute passed.

Then she ran down the steps to our room. She paused at the bottom, by the door to the back yard.

“Bunnies! You won’t believe this.” She was whispering for some reason.

“I just saw the mama rabbit out the window. She has babies.”

    My roommate’s eyes were wide.

    “I saw two babies!”

She turned the knob and cracked the door open. She stuck her head into the crack and peeked outside.

The English watched her the entire time. He stood at the edge of his pen, pushing his nose through the bars.

“They’re over by the peach tree, bunnies.”

She stood there for a long time, looking outside and not speaking.

Finally she took a step back and quietly pushed the door closed.

“I could see their little ears. It’s the cutest thing on earth. I can’t …”

    Suddenly, the English thumped.

    I jumped.

    Little Fang jumped.

My roommate whipped her head around and stared down at him.

    THUMP!

    He did it again.

    “You are not jealous.”

She said this to the English.

“You know you’re my baby rabbit.”

    Oh brother.

She climbed into the pen and sat on the floor beside him.

    “Who’s my little kit?”

The English closed his eyes while she petted his forehead and ears.

“You’re the best bunny in the world.”

I tuned out at that point.

Well, I hope you liked reading about the new rabbit family in my backyard.

This week, when the weather gets hot, my roommate will put a big bowl of cold water outside for them.

If you have any “wild” friends living outside your house, I hope you can put some water out this week too.

PS: If you have a good “before and after grooming” photo, send it to belinda@smallpetselect.com. I like to see how everyone’s doing with their molts.

Or you can just email me to say hi.

    Sincerely,

    Belinda
