The roommate discovers a rabbit family in the backyard.

    Hello. It’s Belinda.

Happy Father’s Day to everyone who celebrates. I hope you get extra treats today. Or whatever you like best.

    Like a nap.

Last year I wrote a blog called “How To Be a Rabbit Dad.”

All about the “good eggs” who take A+ care of rabbits.

Be sure to take a look at it. Especially the photo I included of “Thunder” and his dad.

If that doesn’t melt your heart you’re made of tougher stuff than I am.

OK now I have a story about a different type of rabbit dad.

It all started about a month ago.

It was a normal May evening, right around sunset.

I was stretched out on my sleeping rug, in the corner by the furnace. Little Fang was a few feet away, standing in her pen. She was telling me about a dream she had the night before. Something about flying through the air with lightning bugs.

The English was across the room, perched on his sleeping box. “Eavesdropping.”

    I pretended he wasn’t there.

Just then, my roommate walked down the steps. And when she got to the bottom, she unlocked the door to the backyard.

“It’s a beautiful evening outside, bunnies.”

    She pulled the door open.

Suddenly, the room filled with fresh air. It blew in through the screen door.

Little Fang closed her eyes and took a big breath through her nose. I did too.

    “Isn’t this nice, Belinda?”

My roommate leaned against the doorway and stared out at the backyard.

She glowed a little. Because of the sunset.

All of a sudden she gasped.

    “Oh! Oh my!”

Her mouth hung open. She was smiling.

She turned her head toward the English.

“There’s two rabbits, over by the peach tree.” She said this in a whisper. As if the outdoor rabbits could hear.

She looked out the door again for a moment. Then glanced at me with a big grin on her face.

    “They’re playing tag, Belinda!”

She watched the rabbits run around the yard for a long time. Until she didn’t glow anymore because the sun went down.

Then my roommate closed and locked the back door and went upstairs. Little Fang watched her, then turned and walked to her sleeping box.

I flopped onto my side. I looked forward to watching the window over the dryer get dark so I could doze off.

    The room was peaceful.

    Then he said it.

    They weren’t playing tag.

    The English.

    I ignored him.

Those wild rabbits. They were not playing tag.

I could feel him looking at me. I didn’t budge.

If you wait long enough he stops talking.

    They were dancing the tango.

    What’s the tango?

That was Little Fang. Her voice muffled from inside her sleeping box.

    Oh no.

I just realized I am going over my “word count” for this blog.

I’m really sorry about this. But I’ll finish my Father’s Day story next week.

You’ll never guess what happens next.

PS: If you have a good “before and after grooming” photo, send it to belinda@smallpetselect.com. I like to see how everyone’s doing in this hot weather.

Or you can just email me to say hi.

    Sincerely,

    Belinda
