You are not going to believe what the English did.
I’ve been “fuming” about it for weeks. Ever since I wrote the blog about a stray rabbit in my neighborhood.
This fellow.
He was rescued soon after that photo was taken.
And that’s where my story begins.
My roommate was part of the group who helped to capture the rabbit. She was super happy. “To put it mildly.”
So when she got home, she rushed downstairs to tell us.
“Great news, bunnies! That little stray rabbit is heading to Eleanor’s house for the night.”
I was so relieved.
Eleanor is a rabbit who was rescued a year ago in my neighborhood. Her humans get an A+ in helping rabbits who are stranded outside.
After my roommate went back upstairs, I decided to throw a little party. To celebrate the good news.
So I walked to my stash and “rummaged around.” You need something special to celebrate a rabbit being saved from the outdoors.
A Country Loop sounded about right.
I took one out of the box and broke it into three pieces.
First I gave a piece to Little Fang. I pushed it with my foot through the bars of her pen.
I guess I was in an extra good mood at that moment. I don’t know what came over me. But I slid a second piece of Country Loop through the pen to Little Fang.
Give one to him, I told her.
Meaning the English.
She nodded.
A moment or two later, the three of us chewed our loops together, quietly. It was a nice “celebration toast” if you want to know the truth.
Then it was time for me to get back to work under the utility sink. I had hay reports to finish.
I was in the middle of my alfalfa numbers when it started.
“There was a stray rabbit in the neighborhood last year.”
The English.
I ignored him.
“The black rabbit running loose. Sounds like he was running around in the same yard as the first rabbit.”
No reply from me. No time for his “observations.”
But then he said it.
“I think they were coming for your stash.”
And that’s where I lost my cool.
I spun around and glared. The English was perched on his sleeping box. Looking down his nose at me.
First of all, they are not coming for my stash, I said.
He didn’t even blink.
Secondly mind your own business.
With that I turned back to my spreadsheets. But I couldn’t concentrate.
So now the English is blaming me for all the stray rabbits. Me and my stash of treats and snacks.
Come on.
Those stray rabbits are outside for one reason and one reason only.
It happens all over the country.
I don’t know why he is such a pain in the dewlap.
