Introducing New Diets to Sugar Gliders: A Guide to Transitioning

Sugar gliders are known for their selective eating habits, often showing hesitation when introduced to unfamiliar foods. Successfully transitioning them to new diets requires patience and a strategic approach based on their age and current diet. In this guide, we’ll explore effective techniques to ease the process of introducing exotic nutrition diets to your sugar gliders.

    Understanding Glider Appetites:

Sugar gliders have small stomachs, approximately the size of the tip of your thumb. To encourage your gliders to try new foods, reduce their serving size temporarily. Despite initial reluctance, rest assured that these intelligent animals won’t let themselves starve.

    Transitioning Pellet Diets:

Method for Transitioning from One Diet to Another:

    • Day 1: 90% old diet & 10% new diet
    • Day 2: 80% old diet & 20% new diet
    • Day 3: 70% old diet & 30% new diet
    • Day 4: 50% old diet & 50% new diet
    • Day 5: 25% old diet & 75% new diet
    • Day 6: 10% old diet & 90% new diet
    • Day 7: 0% old diet & 100% new diet

    Overcoming Picky Eating:

    • Drizzle Honey Sticks over pellets to intrigue gliders.
    • If the pellet diet includes dried fruit, remove the fruit initially to encourage focus on pellets.
    • Ensure the pellet diet is the sole food provided during the transition.

    Building Patience:

    • Gliders may take time to adjust to pellets, especially if accustomed to fruits and treats.
    • Resist offering alternative foods during the transition.
    • A brief period of feeding 100% pellets for five days ensures adaptation.

    Addressing Common Concerns:

    • Gliders may chew, suck nutrients, and discard pellet remains, known as “spittings.” (see image for example)
    • Some may perceive pellets as toys and play with them; consider using a No-Mess Press N’ Slide Feed Station with Dome.

    Daily Diet Plans:

There are many opinions on which foods are best for sugar gliders. We want to provide you with the necessary information to make informative decisions, and to choose what you think will be right for your gliders. We do not wish to dictate your decisions, but rather offer guidelines, answer questions, give recommendations, and provide options. We try to offer as many diet plans as possible, to satisfy everyone’s personal specifications and beliefs about what to feed their sugar gliders.

To outline our recommendations, here at Exotic Nutrition we believe the best sugar glider diet consists of 75% high-quantity pellet or kibble with and 25% variety including fruits & vegetables with a balanced Ca:P (Calcium to Phosphorus) ratio.

Our most recommended daily diet plan that is economical, easy to feed and nutritious is the Glider Essential Deluxe Food Starter Package. Offer Glider Essential free choice along with Garden Fresh Re-Hydrate and Exotic Nutrition HPW.

Sugar Gliders thrive with variety in their diet. This diet plan can be varied by offering Gummivore-fare, Gliderade, Berries & Bugs, or other supplemental foods once your pet consumes all of their regular base diet.

    Conclusion:

Transitioning your sugar gliders to a new diet requires dedication and a gradual approach. By understanding their behavior and following these steps, you can ensure a healthy and successful adaptation to an exotic nutrition diet. Remember, patience and trust in the process are key to a smooth transition for your intelligent and unique companions.
