Chapter 88 – Speaking Rabbit
As Dad sat down for breakfast by the glass coffee table, Enzo and Merlot came bounding over for treats. They stood up on their back feet and looked up at Dad.
“You want treats?” he asked, as if he didn’t know the answer. Dad set the treat platter down. Enzo immediately began nibbling on the treats. Merlot, however, sniffed each of the treats. She wasn’t in the mood for any of them. She wanted something different.
“It’s been awhile since I’ve had loops,” she thought, “But how do I communicate that to Dad?” Merlot stood up on her back feet and stared at Dad.
Dad looked down and asked, “What’s the matter, Merlot? Don’t you like those treats?”
Merlot just stared at him. Dad leaned over to Merlot, and she craned her neck up and wiggled her nose by his mouth. Dad had always handed her loops with his teeth.
Dad understood right away. He asked, “Oh, you want a loop?” He grabbed the box of berry loops, pulled one out, and gripped it between his teeth. He leaned over to Merlot. Merlot sniffed it. “Yep, that’s what I want!” she thought. She grabbed it with her teeth and sat down to munch on her treat.
Enzo looked over and asked, “Whacha got?” Merlot said, “I begged a loop!” Enzo said, “I want one, too!” Following Merlot’s lead, he turned to Dad and stood up on his back feet.
Dad laughed, “Oh, you want one, too?” He grabbed another berry loop and handed it to Enzo.
In the quiet of the morning, all that could be heard was the crunching of loops by two contented rabbits.
Merlot said, “I’m glad Dad speaks rabbit.” Enzo agreed, “Me, too!”
