Chapter 124 – The Walls Come Tumbling Down
Dino was resting in his pen when he heard the front door open. He ran out to see who it was. “Merlot! Dad’s back!” he exclaimed.
Dad stepped into the ex-pen and picked up Dino and gave him a hug. “How are you little guy?” he asked. Dino thought, “I’m so glad you’re back! Merlot said you’d be back, but I was worried.” Dino purred as Dad petted his head.
Merlot slinked out from under the bed where she had been napping. Dad asked, “So how’s my little princess?” Merlot thought, “I’m fine. Welcome home!”
Dad said, “I bet you’re tired of being in the pen, Dino. I’m going to open the gate while I clean.”
Dad opened the gate and waited to see their reaction. It had been five days since they had met face-to-face. Would it be better or worse?
Dino chased after Merlot. Then Merlot chased Dino. At one point, Merlot charged at Dino and Dino launched high into the air, like a binky. To Dad, their chasing seemed more playful than challenging.
Then came the moment of truth. Merlot put her head down. Dino groomed her. He acknowledged that she was the alpha bun. Merlot said, “OK, you can stay.”
The walls came tumbling down. Figuratively and literally. From then on, there was no more chasing. The two buns laid beside each other, even without the fence. They ate off the same food tray. They shared the same treat platter. They had bonded!
Dad said, “Well, I guess we don’t need this anymore.” He folded up the ex-pen. Dino had joined the fluffle. They were a family.
