The main reason people buy their dogs rawhide is to keep their dogs busy Chewing and having a treat that will last longer than 5 minutes. But because we know the damage rawhide can do to your dog (as explained in my other post Rawhide | The Worst Treat To Feed Your Dog), it’s best to seek other alternatives, to minimise the awful risk rawhide can cause to your dog, so here is a list of other alternatives on the market out there, that will fulfil their need to chew, clean their teeth, keep them busy and happy.
Raw bones, such as a frozen marrow bone
This will last them hours! Not only is it safe but no added chemicals or dyes, just a frozen bone with marrow inside it. Make sure you get the right size, though. Aim for a size similar to that of your dogs head and never get one too small. You can find these at your local raw store or some supermarkets. It’s best to buy in person, rather than online as you can size them up and check their condition better. These will keep your dogs teeth clean, however be extra cautious if your dog is elderly as their teeth could potentially break. These shouldn’t be fed to young puppies either, as it may cause some stomach upsets. Make sure your dog is always supervised when given a bone.
Vegetable based chews
Such as this Chicken and vegetable retriever roll chew. It’s safe, cleans their teeth and is a great, tasty long lasting chew. It shouldn’t upset their stomach or pose a risk of blockages like a rawhide chew will. Another great chew is a Whimzee rice bone.
Antlers
Antler like this one Devil dog pet co antler chew, are a great alternative to rawhide, particularly if your dog is an aggressive chewer. Antlers last a very long lasting and a really great way of keeping their teeth sparkling clean.
Frozen carrots
Frozen carrots are a great, healthy and light alternative to rawhide. Not only that, they’re very budget friendly.
Coffee tree wood

Paddywack
100% natural and delicious for your dog, a Paddywack is a great alternative chew.
These are just some of the many chews out there that are all great alternatives to rawhide.
