Chapter 113 – The Bunnyprise Refit

Armed with a leaf blower, vacuum cleaner, and two steam cleaners, Dad attacked the Bunnyprise room for a deep cleaning. Over the seven years that Mocha and Hobo had lived aboard the Bunnyprise, the room had evolved to fit their “habits.” It was time to reset the room back to “original specifications.”

He started by using the leaf blower to blow the rabbit fur and dust from the vaulted ceiling and nooks and crannies. Next, he removed the second layer of vinyl flooring and carpet that protected the original carpet from their random bathroom habits. Having been raised outside in their early years where the world was their bathroom, they regarded the litter box as merely a suggestion.

Next, all the furniture went outside on the deck. With the room empty, Dad vacuumed up seven years of rabbit poop pellets that Mocha and Hobo had hidden away in corners and under the furniture. He vacuumed up all the rabbit fur that lined the back and underside of the couch.

In some places, their pee had leaked through the protective layers and stained the original carpet. Over the next few days, Dad cleaned the entire room with three passes of carpet steam cleaner. For the tougher stains, he used a hand-held steam cleaner to spot clean. Finally, the carpet looked – and smelled – new again! Once it was all dry, he moved all the furniture back in the room.

As he gazed upon the brightly lit room, he smiled. The room had returned to his original vision – except for the addition of the giant metal portrait of “the boys.” He decided to leave that as a reminder of the original “crew” of the Bunnyprise. As he looked at their sweet faces, a wave of sadness washed over him as flashbacks of their antics played his mind like an old movie – Hobo playing dead in the litter box, they boys racing to the food tray, Hobo falling over backwards. It was the end of an era.

The Bunnyprise refit was complete and retired from active duty. From now on, it was available on a standby basis for emergency rescue missions.
