Guinea pigs are often recommended as great starter pets, but there’s a lot more to these adorable little rodents than many people realize. With their expressive squeaks, social personalities, and lovable faces, it’s easy to see why so many families fall in love with them. Despite their small size, guinea pigs have specific care requirements that every prospective parent should understand before bringing one home.

Like any pet, guinea pigs depend on their humans to provide the right environment, nutrition, and companionship to help them thrive. Knowing what to expect ahead of time can help prevent surprises and ensure both you and your new furry friend have the best possible experience together. Below are five important things every future guinea pig parent should know before adopting.

Important Things To Know Before Adopting a Guinea Pig

Like any pet, guinea pigs rely on the humans in their lives to provide the best care and environment to keep them safe, healthy, and thriving. Knowing what to expect before bringing one home is essential to ensure the home is fit for the small pet and that a guinea pig fits into the family. Here are five important things to understand before adopting a guinea pig.

Guinea Pigs Are Active and Not Just During the Day

Unlike a lot of small pets who are primarily awake during the nighttime, guinea pigs aren’t only mostly active during the nighttime. According to the Humane Rescue Alliance, guinea pigs are very active animals, and that’s true for many hours throughout the day. They don’t tend to make a lot of noise, only at night, which you might see with other small pets like hamsters, but they only sleep for about 4 hours total each day, so they’ve got a lot of energy to run out at all hours of the day.

    Guinea Pigs Are Very Social

Guinea pigs might be small, but their personalities are larger than life. One of the many charming things these cute, small animals do is all the vocalizations and chirps they make throughout the day. According to the RSPCA, guinea pigs are happiest in groups, in the wild often being seen in families of 5 or 10, and they love to talk, making 11 different sounds.

Despite their reputation as beginner-friendly pets, guinea pigs require much more care than people realize. According to the Humane Rescue Alliance, guinea pigs poop up to 100 times a day, which requires cleaning their enclosures often to keep the animals safe. These guys also require spacious enclosures, daily vegetables, social interaction, exercise, regular cleaning, and fresh hay, all of which take a lot of time and money.

    Their Teeth Constantly Grow

Like many rodents, guinea pigs have teeth that constantly grow, which requires them to have access to tools that keep their teeth from becoming overgrown, the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society explains. This means a guinea pig needs access to hay, firm vegetables like carrots, and nontoxic, safe chew toys.

    Guinea Pigs Are Very Smart

Maybe it’s their small size, but guinea pigs tend to be underestimated. What they lack in size, they more than make up for in intelligence. According to the RSPCA, guinea pigs need a lot of mental stimulation to keep them from getting bored. This means having access to things like toys and places to explore, gnaw, forage, or hide in.

Guinea pigs are incredible pets for the right family, but there’s also more to them than people may expect. Understanding their daily care routine, social needs, dietary requirements, and temperament before you adopt will set the whole family up for success. And the more prepared you are, the more time you’ll spend making happy memories for years to come.
