I can’t stop thinking about what happened a year ago.
Right here in Pittsburgh. In fact right here in my neighborhood.
My roommate said it wasn’t actually a tornado. It was “just” 90-mile-an-hour winds slamming into the window above the dryer.
You’ve never heard such a commotion. The wind even snapped a tree in half across the street.
Well it’s storm season again.
You might remember that we lost power a couple of weeks ago. From a wind storm.
I wrote about that in my blog. Here’s a link to Part 1, about the start of the storm. And here’s the part where we lost electricity.
That really shook me up if you want to know the truth.
So I thought I would write a blog about how rabbits can prepare for spring storms. Just a few tips.
First of all, the refrigerator.
When the power goes out, you are supposed to leave the refrigerator door closed. “No cheating.”
Every time you open the door, you let warm air inside. So if you have romaine lettuce and parsley and endive and other salad greens inside the “fridge,” they might start to go bad.
That’s a terrible thought.
My advice is if you know there’s a big storm coming, enjoy your salads before the rain and wind start. It’s what I would do.
Next, watch out for water.
When there’s an extra big rain, sometimes water leaks under the door. Once I even saw a puddle in the corner of our room.
That’s right. Water was coming through the cement blocks.
First thing I did was move my stash out of the way. You do not want your hay to get wet.
My roommate just yelled downstairs. She knows I’m working on this blog and she wants me to remind everybody that hay needs to stay “high and dry.”
I just wrote that. I don’t know why she’s “piping in.”
Have carriers ready.
Before, during or after a storm, you might have to leave the house in a hurry. The last thing you want to do is run all over the house looking for your rabbit’s “travel gear.”
One excellent “hack” is to have car carriers set up in your rabbit’s room at all times. “Ready to go.”
My roommate keeps three carriers down here on the bottom level. One for me, one for Little Fang, one for the English.
She leaves each carrier open on the floor with a blanket inside. That’s so we don’t slide around when we’re riding in the car.
Sometimes I sleep in mine. Don’t tell my roommate.
